48,000 Computers At Fukushima Plant Operator Still Run On Windows XP

Following an investigation by japan board of autits, The Tokyo Electric Power Company has been asked to upgrade the operating system of their computer systems. This is not common, but they run 48,000 computers on Windows XP operating system. Plus, the computers are all connected to the internet.

Microsoft Windows XP was released in 2001, and it enjoyed updates from Microsoft for more than 10 years until it was finally cut off in 2014.

It was after most extensions due to the in-functionality and poor performance of subsequent versions of Windows XP.

Lack of security patches means that the operating system will be vulnerable to a large amount of security flaws that will be discovered. They might not have worried about the security if the computers were not connected to the internet.

TEPCO is verily aware of how old it's operating systems are, but they are not ready to change upgrade it till at least 2019. This insinuates that their workers will be using an operating system that is 18 years old by that time.

But really, it shouldn’t have taken a government audit to convince an operator of nuclear power plants that using outdated, insecure computers is a bad idea.
