Nepal Earthquake Update: Stranded People Are Being By Google's Person Finder And Facebook's Safety Check

Since the occurrence that has been happening in Nepal and some other parts of India has surfaced, modern web-based technology:Google's person finder and Facebook's safety check has been making progressive efforts in helping people find their loved ones who are stranded as a result of victimization of the catastrophe.

Two big companies-Facebook and Google has done a great job in locating those who are stranded in-quake-hit vicinity.

For instance, members of one Himmatramka family residing in Birgunj in Nepal marked themselves safe on Facebook. “Our relatives back in India were worried about our safety. So, we marked ourselves safe to inform them,” said Nitesh Himmatramka.

Many people from Uttar and Bungal have also used this application as a medium to inform their relatives of their safety.

Facebook’s safety tool, ‘Safety App’, is a very useful and powerful tool that is being used by Facebook users to alert their friends or family that appear to be in affected areas and those friends and families in-turn tell them about their safety status.

“Safety Check is our way of helping our community during natural disasters and gives you an easy and simple way to say you’re safe and check on all your friends and family in one place,” Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg had said in a post.

The idea for this app came in 2011, after the tsunami in Japan, which caused a high level of disorganization among people leaving them with no or little clue of where their loved ones were.

The technology gathers information from the families and individuals in affected areas, enabling them to upload information and therefore find their kin. The app is available in English and Nepali.

A 7.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Nepal yesterday followed by several aftershocks and left a trail of death and destruction, flattening houses and buildings, including the iconic Dharhara tower and the landmark Darbar Square in the heart of the capital.

Death toll in the quake has climbed to 1,807 while the number of injured has gone up to 4,721.
